This course reinforces career information, and employment opportunities, and expands on skills required for work in the woodworking and cabinetmaking industry.


     Topics include the woodworking industries, health, and safety design and layout, materials, hand tools, power tools, portable and stationary, preparation, construction and assembly, and finishing.


 English language arts and mathematics are reinforced. Due to potentially hazardous processes and equipment 

 

 

Students will learn about, and use, basic hand tools and power tools with much emphasis on the maintenance and safe operation of these tools.

 They will learn about standard lumber, engineered lumber, nails and fasteners, sheathing materials, and various other building materials that are utilized in the Cabinetmaking and Woodworking industries. 

Woodworking II students will also gain a better understanding of math practices that are commonly used in the craft and woodworking industry.

Students will also learn soft skills such as communication, leadership, organization, and planning, and gain an understanding of some of the things that will be important in becoming successful in a trade and/or industrial career choice.

Methods of instruction in this course will include Class lectures, demonstrations, hands-on practice, class discussion, and videos.

 Daily attendance and classroom participation are required and extremely important for the successful completion of this course.

Students are expected to complete assigned work, and it is the student’s responsibility to ask the instructor for any work that was missed in the event of an absence and submit this work as directed.

 

.Course objectives:

 At the end of this course, the students will be able to;

  1. Understand the cabinet-making industry, and also the Health and Safety hazards, and Safety practices.
  2. Apply design and layout procedures as they relate to woodworking.
  3. Understand the common materials used in this industry and their characteristics.
  4. Apply the safe and appropriate use of hand tools
  5. Apply the safe and appropriate use of both handheld and stationary power tools
  6. Understand surface preparation and finishes
  7. Apply cabinet construction and assembly.

 

 

Attendance: Daily attendance is mandatory. Absences will be excused only per the student handbook. An unexcused absence will result in a grade of zero (0). 

Class preparation: Have all work that is assigned, completed, and ready to turn in when you come to class.

BE ON TIME.

 

Grading: Each Quarter grades are calculated as follows:

 

Classwork, Assignments, Handouts, etc.  ------- 50%

Tests and Projects. ------------------------------------50%

 

Final Course Grades are calculated as follows:

Quarter 1-------------------------------------------------------40%

Quarter 2 ------------------------------------------------------40%

Final Exam/Proof of learning--------------------------------20%

  4. Absolutely no Cell Phones, Headphones, Earbuds, or any other electronic devices are to be used in this class.           ( You can not game on any device in this classroom.)
