In Earth Science you will be studying the structures of the Earth, how it is changing, and how humans are affecting it. This includes, but is not limited to, the rock cycle, earthquakes and volcanoes, weather and climate change, ecology, etc.  

Required Materials:

  • Notebook/paper - Colored pencils - Glue

***IMPORTANT INFORMATION***

Earth Environmental Science is a North Carolina state-regulated course. There will be a teacher-made final at the end of the semester, which all students are required to take.  

Expectations:

Students are expected to act in a proper and honorable manner and adhere to all county and school regulations stated in the student handbook. Students that do not comply with classroom and school rules will face discipline from the teacher and/or administration.

Class Rules:

  1. Come to class prepared and ready to learn.
  2. Be respectful of school, personal property, and people.   
  3. Wear a mask/approved facial covering at all times (must be over your nose and properly worn).

Consequences:

             1st Offense: Warning              2nd Offense: Parent Contact       3rd Offense: Referral to Administration

**ANY behavior that is a disruption to the learning environment will result in referral to administration.**

Grading and Assignments:

  1. Assignments will be a combination of the following: labs, tests, quizzes, final exam, and various daily activities. The grading policy is as follows:

 - Quizzes/Tests: 45%     - Labs/Projects: 30%     - Classwork: 25%

***The final exam will count 20% of the final grade and is teacher-made. No one is exempt. ***

Late Work

Work should be completed and turned in on time. Late work will receive a 10 point deduction each day. After this, students will need to attend after-school office hours to make up the work for a max 60%.  

Attendance Policy:

Attendance in school is essential to educational achievement and school success.  State law requires school attendance for all children between the ages of seven and sixteen.  Parents are responsible for students attending and remaining in school daily. Parents and students should familiarize themselves with the Franklin County Attendance Policy – Policy Code 4400.  

Safety in the Laboratory - Student Contract

  • All accidents should be reported to the teacher immediately, no matter how minor.
  • Only those laboratory activities where instructions and permission have been given by the teachers should be performed.
  • Only materials and equipment authorized by the teacher should be used.
  • Written and verbal instructions should be followed carefully.  All instructions given by the teacher should be closely followed.
  • Gloves should be worn when working with microorganisms.  Gloves should be worn when completing experiments with DNA, proteins, and the reagents necessary for these experiments.
  • Lab tables should be organized for work. They should be cleaned at the conclusion of every laboratory period.  Sinks should be kept clean.  They are not a trash receptacle.  Good housekeeping practices are a must.
  • Chemicals should be handled with caution.  You should NEVER taste ANY lab materials even if they are a food product!
  • Goggles should be worn where appropriate.
  • Food and drink should not be handled during the lab.
  • Students should know the position of the emergency eye wash, fire blanket, and fire extinguisher.
  • Student apparel should be appropriate for laboratory work.  Long hanging necklaces, bulky and baggy clothing, and open shoes are not appropriate for laboratory work.
  • Broken glass should be removed from a work area and placed in the glass receptacle.
  • Biological waste should be placed in the appropriate waste container.
  • Laboratory animals are to be handled under the supervision of a teacher.
  • All laboratory equipment is to be handled in a responsible manner.  Incorrect usage of laboratory equipment after training will result in disciplinary action.
  • Due to the sophisticated nature and expense of the materials required for the biology courses each student must learn and follow the above rules when participating in a laboratory.
