Teaching as a Profession I Honors

This inherently honors college level course is designed to encourage students who possess those personality traits found in good teachers, to consider teaching as a career. Students are exposed to the many facets of education through class discussion, observation and participation in public school classrooms. Students will examine their aptitudes for teaching, learner needs and development, including students with exceptionalities, and the history, trends, and governance of education. English/language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, technology, and interpersonal relationships are reinforced.
As presented in the course essential standards, students are preparing for careers in education by covering the following topics:
- The structure of schooling,
- The history of education,
- The science of teaching,
- The art of teaching, and
- Ethical teachers
Grading Criteria:
Classwork/Homework: 40%
Assessments: 30%
Projects: 30%
In place of a final exam, there is a Performance Based Measurement for Teaching as a Profession. The Proof of Learning (POL) for this course is a Performance-based Measurement (PBM) designed for individual evaluation. Students will apply the content from throughout the course to complete the components of the Performance-based Measurement. There is a total of 145 points possible when you add the Educational Philosophy and the Self-reflection pieces together for the Performance-based Measurement. Students must earn at least 101 points or above to be reported as proficient.
Franklin County Schools Grading Scale: Report cards will go out every 9 weeks. Progress reports will go out on weeks 3 and 6.
A: 90-100
B: 80-89
C: 70-79
D: 60-69
F: 59 and Below
If you are home due to quarantine, you can join a Google meet with me on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 2:30. If you would like to "meet" online during those times, or set up another time, email me and I will respond to you with the meeting code.
Tutoring: I am available for tutoring/makeup work on Wednesdays from 3:00 - 3:30. If that time doesn't work, we will set up an appointment. There will also be a designated time once a week in class for makeup work and assistance.
Supplies Needed: A Chromebook or other device will be necessary. I also suggest a binder, paper, and pens/pencils.

As part of the learning environment, students may be asked to use the following third party digital tools:
- Google Meets and recordings; Google drive
- Quizlet
- Actively Learn
- Kahoot
- EdPuzzle
- Kami
- Screencastify

Students will access course information by logging into Canvas. Assignments and videos will be posted daily. Students will need their student number and password for NCEdcloud. If you have questions about the student login, please email me.
PARENTS: Use the following directions to create a Canvas Observer Account
- Have your student(s) Generate a Pairing Code (Links to an external site.) (this will be different for each student).
- Go to https://fcschools.instructure.com/login/canvas (bookmark this site so that you can easily access your Observer dashboard for your student(s).
- Click on Parent of a Canvas User? in the upper right-hand corner of the window.
- Complete the required information in the window, which will include inputting the student Pairing Code. Multiple students can be added.
- Go to the Dashboard to see your student(s)' courses.
- Parents can sign into this account to easily access their student's courses within Canvas.
