Course Description

Welcome to English I. This course will focus on literature and composition, reinforcing a study of standard grammar usage, mechanics, and vocabulary. In literature, the course includes the short story, the novel, drama, poetry, mythology, and nonfiction.

Course Objectives     

Students will...

  1. Apply appropriate strategies in developing reading skills for a variety of purposes.
  2. Recognize elements of short stories, novels, essays, poems, and plays. 
  3. Apply listening skills, personal study skills, and principles of Standard English in vocabulary.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of language terminology and application of the concepts through speaking and writing.

Classroom Norms  

  1. Act as if you are at school.
  2. Use all tools appropriately to help learning.
  3. Be a problem solver using the tools that you have. 

Attendance is required and will be taken daily. If a student misses 3 classes, then the Parent/Guardian will be contacted.

Vocabulary lessons will be a routine part of the curriculum. You will be tested on a regular basis.

Grading (Assignment Weights)    Classwork/Homework – 40%  

Tests- 60% 

Late Work: Ten points will be deducted from the score of an assignment for every day that it is late.  

Plagiarism is cheating. Plagiarism includes using another person’s words or ideas without giving him or her credit. Cutting and pasting from articles or other documents on the internet without properly citing the source constitutes plagiarism. Do NOT do this!

  1. Come to class on time and prepared.

Be in our virtual classroom at the designated class time.  Turn off your music before class begins.

Respect the comments, questions, and ideas of others.  I will not tolerate rudeness nor insensitivity.

  1. Listen to instruction.

When a teacher is talking, you should be listening.  Listening helps you learn!

  1. Have a positive attitude.

A positive attitude is contagious! Keep an open mind during class activities!

5.Remember the Golden Rule, and be kind to one another.

Treat others the way that you want to be treated.
