Course Syllabus

5/13

Our last project - You have a choice

1.  Investigate these simulations  Link   and develop a lesson that could be used in Math 1 , Math 2, Math 3, Pre-Cal, or my favorite Calculus.  The lesson can be simple or more complex - depending on you.  The main point is to help students tie together a math concept (or equation) with a simulation.  Play around with some of the simulations -minimum write a paragraph connected the ideas - maximum the sky is the limit (slides, worksheet, post quiz whatever you would do to make sure a students learns and relates the simulation and the math concept)   Have fun ! sharing you knowledge and excitement about math.

2.  Visit Ms. Tate's STEAMS site and participate in 2 of the different activities she has found for you.  I will copy and paste some of her email here so you will easily be able to get in contact with her.  What I will need from you is to write a paragraph/email about the activities including a video or pictures.

My "office hours" through Google Meet are listed below.  These hours are for you and/or the students, and I will be sending this information to them, as well.  My office hours are a great time to share ideas, discuss different ways to digitally connect with students, and discuss remote learning successes and/or challenges.
Tuesdays: 9:00-11:00    https://meet.google.com/zsn-ihvk-nqa
Thursdays:  1:00-3:00   https://meet.google.com/rzt-yksm-gpt
Also, I have set-up two Google Classrooms for the students:  one for STEAM challenges and one for Reading & Reflecting.  The codes are below.  These classes will begin the week of April 13th.  Please feel free to use one, or both, of these classes to supplement your classes, as you see fit (extra credit, an actual assignment, PBIS incentive, etc.)
STEAM code:  tevar4t
Reading & Reflecting code:  lwbiobu
*To navigate to these classes, go to classroom.google.com  and then enter the code.
For the STEAM class, students will have three STEAM challenges to pick from per week.  All of the challenges will use simple household items, and students will be able to substitute materials if they don't have them.  It is a free-flowing class, where students can choose which challenges interest them, and there is not a minimum or maximum of how many they can do.

Hey Students,

I'm working hard to get modules ready for you to submit your homework - Keep working and I'll send and email soon about due dates .  They will be submitted in Modules as photos this video might help you know what to do

or   --- This is how I have been uploading photos so you can try this when you get ready - my screen doesn't look like yours but these are my best instructions
1.  Take a picture of your work for review #1  - do these one at a time

2. Send it to your Franklin County email

3. Download it - write down the number of the image so you are sure to place the correct review in the correct place

4. Go to Modules and fine the place to submit/upload a file

5. Choose a file - will be you photo check the number (I would like to see a photo of your pet - just not here - pick the correct number :))

6.Click open and upload a file
That is what I do - Try it and see if that works for you.

Hey Students,

These are trying times - make good choices and be safe !!

Please complete all HW  - Assignment #7 and Assignment #7.5 this will get you ready for our next test - which was to be on Tuesday but of course will be moved - we will have time for a review day after returning to school  - Do your best but   don't stress.

If at all possible please stop by school to receive a copy of "5 Steps to a 5" it is a review booklet we use to get ready for the exam - your required review materials will be in that book.  The school will be open tomorrow for pick up 3 to 6 PM.  I will be at school tomorrow until about 3

The assignment sheet will be included in the material and found online - but you will need a booklet - I'm hoping you can pick it up tomorrow if that is impossible we will make new plans - email me - thanks!

For now we are not teaching new materials - but lucky us we don't have too much new stuff to cover :).  You, however, will see that I have open up the next unit on Canvas and you are welcome, even encouraged, to continue your learning there with the help of videos, our textbook and any solution I can include while I'm at home.  When working FRQs use Ask Mr Calculus if you need to see more than just the scoring guide

Again be safe and make good choices,

Armenia Davis

Welcome to the 2020 Spring Semester!  I am so happy that you have decided to take AP Calculus.  I am looking forward to a great year!

It is my goal to provide all students with an educationally challenging experience in my classroom.  As an AP course, I expect students to participate in class, complete their assignments in a timely manner with quality, study for tests, and ask for help when needed

Our general topics for the course include Integration; Definite Integrals with Riemann Sums and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus; Derivative and Integrals of Logarithmic and Exponential Functions; Differentials; Applications of Integrals; and AP Test Review.

GRADING POLICY:  70% Tests/Projects (usually 4 per grading period)    30% HW/CW

FINAL EXAMS:  This class has an AP Test on May 5th and a teacher-made exam at the end of the school year.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS:  Homework assignments are given weekly with due dates.  These assignments are designed to practice important skills in Calculus and to stretch your thinking.  It is your responsibility to complete these assignments on time.  Late homework will not be accepted.

SUPPLIES: Each student is required to have a spiral notebook for notes, a small binder, a (working) graphing calculator, lots of loose leaf paper, graph paper, and a large supply of pencils and erasers.  *****ALL WORK MUST BE IN PENCIL ****

ABSENCES:  Students should make every effort to be in class every day.  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to the notes and assignments.  If a test is missed, it is your responsibility to schedule a make-up time within 2 days of returning to school.
Remember:  YOU CAN BE EXEMPTED FROM THE FINAL EXAM!!  Be here and be on time.

STUDENT HELP:  Tutoring sessions will be provided during Remediation Period.   Appointments can be scheduled with me at other times if necessary.  Please ask – I am usually available most afternoons until 3:30.  Students are encouraged to form study groups outside of class. (That’s the way you make it in college.)

If the student is having problems with a certain topic, there are several ways to find help

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

Welcome to Calculus Advanced Placement (AP)

ArmeniaDavis@fcschools.net       919-496-3975 ext. 319

I am very excited to have you in my Calculus Advanced Placement (AP) class this semester!!  Each of you will do wonderful, learn lots, and be successful.  Here is the general structure of our class.

GOALS: I have very high expectations for all of my students. Our goals and general topics are found on CANVAS…

        Integration   (about 2 week)

Definite Integrals, Riemann Sum, Fundamental Theorem of Calculus (about 3 weeks)

Derivative and Integrals of logarithmic and exponential functions   (about 4 weeks)

         Differentials    (about 2 weeks)

Application of Integration (area under curves and volumes of solid (3 weeks)

AP Test review – through out semester- but really concentrated until Test May 5th

After May 5th we may have things including polar coordinates, permutation, combination, and probability.

EXAM:  This class has an AP Test May 5th and a teacher made exam at the end of the school year.  Students can be exempt from this exam, refer to handbook.  Remember 3 tardies or early outs count as 1 absent against our exam exemption policy and can place you in ASO where you will miss material covered in class.  The college motto is “Go to Class and YOU will Pass,” keep this motto and strive to get college credit.

RULES: All students are expected to act like mature young adults.  ALL BHS Code of Conduct Policies are enforced– KNOW THEM

Be Respectful!  Be Prepared!  Be Focused!  Be on Time!

These rules are geared toward student’s achievement and student learning.  So if at anytime your behavior disrupts others or your own ability to achieve and learn a disciplinary action will occur including: refocus/ redirect, conversation, phone parent, office referral.

SUPPLIES: Each student is required to have a method of organization –notebook and mini spiral are suggested, have a working calculator (TI84, TI84 plus), graph paper, plain paper, large supply of pencils and erasers. ****ALL WORK MUST BE IN PENCIL

MAKE - UP WORK:  If you are absent and miss a test, remember school policy 2 days to make up for each 1 day absent.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS found on CANVAS:  Homework assignments are given weekly with due dates usually Friday but not considered late until Monday beginning of class.  These assignments are designed to practice important skills in Calculus and to stretch your thinking.  It is your responsibility to complete the assignments on time.  Late homework will not be accepted

GRADING POLICY:  70% TEST (3 to 4 in a grading period)        30% HW/CW (8 to 12 in a grading period)

Since homework is designed to stretch your thinking, each time it is not 75% complete there will be a -5 points on your TEST SCORE

STUDENT HELP:  Help sessions will be provided every day during class – just ask also during Remediation Period.  Appointments can be scheduled with me at other times if necessary.  Please ask – I am usually available most afternoons until 3:30. Students are encouraged to form study groups outside of class. (That’s the way you make it in college.)

POWERSCHOOL: Students and Parents/Guardians: PowerSchool is Franklin County Public School’s online site for receiving current, up-to-date information about your student’s progress in all four of their classes. Students and parents/guardians are able to view progress reports and track their performance throughout the semester. You never have to wait to receive grade information again!

                                                                HAVE A GREAT SEMESTER!!
