Course Syllabus

  • Course Description:

This course is a comprehensive introduction to mechanical technical drawing. It is intended to give the student a solid grasp of basic techniques in technical drawing and Engineering graphics. Course topics include sketching, geometric construction, orthographic projection, auxiliary views, isometric views, section views, dimensioning, tolerances, scaling, perspectives, and working drawings. At the end of this course, the student will be able to create a working drawing with full dimensioning and usability using manual techniques.

  • Canvas and Skyward:

In this class will you use Canvas LMS to receive and submit assignments. Is recommended that each student carefully monitor due dates and times presented there as these will be the final say as to when an assignment is due unless arrangements are made prior to the due date. While Canvas does have a built-in gradebook, do not look to this as a guide for your grade. Skyward will always have the final say and it will differ from Canvas. There is a canvas student app that is available for all major smart phone and tablet systems that is very helpful to have as well.

The majority of your work in the is class will be completed on paper. The expectation is that assignments are submitted online. To achieve this, we utilize a free application called CamScanner. It is available for all major smart phone and tablet systems. If you do not want to install it or do not have a device capable of utilizing it, my iPad will be available for student use in this regard.

In skyward an assignment will not be considered late unless I mark it so and adds the late special code L. I enter the assigned due date as the day the assignment is due, however I might not be able to get the assignment graded and entered that day. Please bear with me as skyward automatically ticks anything not entered as missing at midnight the day and assignment is due.

  • Course Rationale:
Drafting fundamentals have stayed the same for many years, but the processes and tools we use have changed. Today our students are prepared for high-tech / high wage jobs. Employers are looking for students with fundamental drafting skills as always, but additionally drafters are now also required to utilize computers. They must apply additional skills and knowledge of multiple programs (CAD, database, and word processing) to complete increasingly varied tasks in addition to communication, mathematical, and troubleshooting skills that are essential.
The Drafting and Design program utilizes state and national drafting standards to formulate regionally targeted competencies and goals. These competencies and goals are approved by the Piper High School Board of Education.
