Course Description:
This course includes more advanced scientific principles and communication skills and includes animal anatomy and physiology, animal management, animal science economics, decision making, global concerns in the industry, genetics, and breeding. English language arts, mathematics, and science are reinforced in this class. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course are apprenticeship, cooperative education, entrepreneurship, internship, mentorship, school-based enterprise, service learning, job shadowing, and supervised agricultural experience. FFA competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences.

Laboratory
This course will require students to participate in laboratory activities, work experiences and field trips. Students must have a safety contract with the appropriate signatures on file with the teacher before participating in any out of class activity. Each student must also pass a safety test with 100% accuracy before he/she will be allowed to take part in laboratory activities.
Student Organization (FFA)
All students are highly encouraged to participate in the FFA Organization. Some opportunities offered by the FFA are local activities, career development events, travel and awards. The local chapter will try to meet every month.

It is expected that every student abide by the code of conduct of FHS. Each student has received and signed a statement that the student has received and read their copy. If you have not done so, please see me immediately and I will see that you have a copy. It is my expectation that you are familiar and understand that FHS code of conduct. Feel free to ask questions concerning this matter.
In every class students should:
- Respect- themselves, classmates, materials/property, and faculty. Respect is earned not given.
- Be best you can- work hard and present your best self in everything you do and take responsibility for your actions.
- No electronics- cell phones, computers, and other electronics can only be used if teacher has given permission.
- No violence- violence and horseplay is not tolerated under any circumstances.
Required Materials
- 3 ring 1 or 2 inch notebook
- Pencil or pen
- Loose Leaf notebook paper
- School Issued Chromebook
It is recommended that your notebook should contain information for this class only.
Food and Drinks
Per school guidelines, food and drinks are not allowed in class. An exception to this will include bottled water which can be capped as well as special rewards offered by the teacher. Some students may have medical reason to eat/drink in class, this must be on record with other faculty.
Assignments
-Weekly assignments. Each week you will be given assignments that reinforce class lectures and readings. Most of these assignments are simple and will not require inordinate amounts of time to complete. However, several of the assignments is to expose you to a variety of materials related to animal science topics and to prepare you for classroom discussion and activities. Each student should strive for 20 points a day, or a 100 for the week. Students weekly grade will drop if failure to pay attention, lack of daily work.
-Quizzes. Every so often students will take quizzes to determine your current level of competency. These quizzes may or may not be announced in class, to make sure the students are prepared at anytime.
-Tests. After completing objectives/units students will take a test to determine mastery of learned concepts. These test will be weighted more than other assignments so students need to attempt to do their best. The tests are there to provide practice for final exam.
-Lab work. This is a work based learning class, so students are expected to participate in the lab activities. These will consists of different things in classroom/shop/greenhouse. This is to give exposure to the students to learn with their hands.
-SAE Project. You will be required to conduct a Supervised Agriculture Experience Project online on The AET. This project will require the student to develop a plan and participate in an approved activity that should total 20 hours of experience outside of the classroom setting. This assignment is designed to help individuals gain experiences that will improve their competitiveness in the workplace. Students will be asked to give presentation at the end of the semester.
Grading Procedures
Your grade in this course will be graded in 3 sections:
1st 9 weeks: 40%
2nd 9 weeks: 40%
Final Exam: 20% (This is a state EOC and students cannot be exempt for this exam)

Permission to leave class
Students should do their best to stay in class during instructional time. It is understood that sometimes you must leave class. In order to leave class you must have a pass (hall/bathroom). The pass will be given to students by teacher. Leaving class without a pass will also constitute skipping class and will result in an office referral.
Class Absence Policy
Students are only allowed ten absences per class before the possibility of failure. If a student is absent, the student needs to submit an excused not explaining their absence (see excused absences in the Code of Student Conduct Book). It is not and will not be the responsibility of the teacher to inform you of materials that you have missed however you are encouraged to schedule an appointment to discuss your academic progress when needed. All missed work needs to be made up within three days for each absence upon returning to school.
Tutoring
Students will be allowed to come in for tutoring hours Tues. and Thur. 2:45-3:30 every week.
