Important Info

August 29, 2016

Dear Parents,
It is a pleasure to have your child in my fifth grade class.  To start the year right, I am sending you this Parent Handbook that I have assembled to help you understand my requirements in conjunction with other vital information that will enable us to make this a very positive and rewarding year.  I feel as though open lines of communication between the parent, student, and teacher are the key to promoting an educational climate that is conducive to learning.  I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year.  Please feel free to contact me at any time if there is a question or situation you would like to discuss.  You will receive additional communication throughout the school year.  I look forward to building a relationship with you and your child and thus providing the best education for your child.

SIncerely,

Classwork

Your child will have assignments during class for which he or she is responsible. Students are given time in class to complete these assignments and will not need to take these home for homework. Please talk to your child about the importance of completing assignments.

Homework

My homework policy is subject to change based upon decisions made by administration. I believe minimal homework is good so you can see what your child is working on in class. I will send homework on Monday each week that will be due on Friday. This way if, for example, your child has practice on Tuesday nights, you do not have to worry about rushing home to do the work because you can do it another day. On the homework I assign if your child doesn’t remember how we did it in class then please write a note stating they weren’t sure. I will help them during our remediation time. Homework will be checked off for completion and for me to see if you child understands the concept taught in class.

Absences

If your child is absent they are responsible for asking for any missed work as soon as they return. This should be completed and turned in as soon as possible.  Please send me a note or email about your child’s absence so it can be excused.

Classroom Materials

A list was sent out over the summer for required materials. If you have already purchased materials then please do not go out to purchase more. I know these things can get quite expensive. The things on this list are not required. Please do not worry about these things.  If you have not purchased materials and you are able to do so,  then I would like for your child to have:

(2) Packages - Loose-leaf paper; #2 Pencils; Colored pencils & Markers (If your child wants these - I have a lot of crayons if not); (1) package Highlighters; (4) Pocket Folders; (2) Marbled/Composition Notebooks; (1) pack of 5 tabs; (2) - Spiral Notebooks; (1) 1 inch binder; (2) packs of index cards; Earbuds (If your child wants them - these would be for the computer lab - they do have some at Dollar Tree)

Classroom Rules

  1. Be kind
  2. Be responsible
  3. Be safe

If a student chooses to not follow classroom procedures then they will be given a verbal warning.  There is a behavior chart posted and repeated infractions over the course of the day can result in the student being removed from the classroom. Every day starts over. I will communicate with you through the agenda whether

Conferences

If you would like to schedule a conference, please send a note with your child  in their agenda or an e-mail.  We will try to coordinate a time that is convenient for everyone involved.
