   Success 101 – Classroom Syllabus

What is Success 101?

This course focuses on providing high school students with curriculum assistance and the skills necessary to be successful during their secondary and post-secondary educational career.  In teaching skills necessary for secondary educational or career success, emphasis will be placed on the acquisition of study skills, development of techniques for time management, social and emotional skills, math and reading comprehension skills, procedures for Internet use, and learning standards unique to individual students.  In addition, students will analyze the importance of post-secondary education by exploring everyday living expenses through real-life applications and researching career and post-secondary opportunities.  The use of technology to prepare and present information, conduct research, develop media skills, and apply problem-solving strategies in the academic disciplines are included.

What is Curriculum Assistance?

Curriculum Assistance is a program option designed for students receiving special education that spend the majority of their day in the general education classroom. The goal of Curriculum Assistance is to provide special education services necessary for students to be successful in general education. The six main components of Curriculum Assistance are Math, Reading, Writing, Study/Organizational Skills, Career Development and Social/Emotional Skills. Implementation of Curriculum Assistance components varies and teachers should utilize their expertise and IEP goals when designing student programs. The integration of all six components is essential for maintaining student success in general education. Grade level content and requirements must be used in curriculum assistance in order for the students to generalize skills and strategies to the general education classroom. Please note this is not a study hall and enrollment in curriculum assistance is an IEP team decision.

Students will be graded on a 10 point scale:

Students will have journal, classwork, and/ or participation grades daily.

Each student will be required to complete ongoing projects.  There will be 3 projects due over the course of the semester.  These will count as a 3rd of the student’s total grade for the semester.  A significant amount of class time will be dedicated to these projects.  If the students use their time wisely, all the projects can be completed at school during class. To provide the necessary time at school, the students will participate in project based learning.  Occasional tests will be given as well which will count as project grades.

What is project based learning? Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, problem, or challenge.
