Spanish Course I -  Syllabus

Student & Parent Contract

              

  1. Course Description- Spanish I

  This course will concentrate on the development of specific language skills in accordance with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Students perform the most basic functions of the language and become familiar with some elements of its culture. Students will learn to communicate using basic structures and vocabulary in everyday situations. Grammar will be taught in a context, which can be applied to real-life situations. Also, students will achieve some cultural understanding of Hispanic people, Latin America countries, and literature.

  1. Objectives:

Our curriculum is informed by the North Carolina Essential Standards for world language instruction.  A student who successfully completes Spanish courses will be able to do the following:

-Use the language to engage in interpersonal communication

-Understand words and concepts presented in the language

-Use the language to present information to an audience

-Compare student’s own culture with the target culture

3. Materials required

1Chromebook and 01 Headset (headphones with microphone)

2. Spanish English- English Spanish Dictionary Approx. Size 8.5” x 5.5” (no smaller or mini ones)
Suggestions: VOX Compact Spanish and English Dictionary /Barron’s Spanish and English Dictionary
3. 01 Two inches 3 ring binder and loose leaf paper
4. 5 subject dividers
5. 4” x 6” ruled Index card (100)
6. Sharpie Assorted Colors Set of 8 colors or more
7. Highlighters (5 different colors)
8. 01 black, 01 red pen and 01 blue pen
9. 01 Mechanical pencil

4.Spanish Canvas Website and Online Responsibility Learning Management System (LMS) Canvas.

In this LMS (Spanish website), students can submit online assignments, study, and also review and practice daily class material. Students can also find: daily class material as well as grammar slides used in class, vocabulary, audio practice pronunciation, and resources for review.

5. Classroom Expectations for Students

I expect everyone to participate and to put effort into his or her classwork. Work is done during class time. Based on participating in class discussions, answering questions, and completing assigned class work. Students will work in the four main areas during class to practice: speaking, listening, writing, and reading.

Writing in Spanish

Students will be required to hand in a written assignment in Spanish for almost every class.

 

6. Plagiarism: Plagiarism is a very serious violation of academic integrity:

a) If your formative or summative assessment is a product of a translation device, Spanish Speaker or just copy from your friend or from the book or the internet you will receive a zero for the entire work
b) Essays and researchYour teacher will run a plagiarism software to check the authenticity of your essay, online assignment or any other work. 
c) Translation Clause: The use of any translation device on the Internet, computer software or native Spanish speaker completing your work, is considered cheating.
d) If your teacher detects plagiarism, you will earn a zero.

We are going to have Formative and Summative Assessments 

7. Assignments ( Classwork-homework- quizzes and test )

  1. All work must be your own! Do not ask other students, relatives, or friends for help on classwork/assignments
  2. Do NOT copy classwork, quiz answers or any other assignments from other students.
  3. Assignments should be done by students
  4. Assignments need to be done on the website after you submitted your work automatically you will have a grade for completing your assignment.
  5. Students have to complete 100% online assignment, there is no possibility to skip the questions and /or leave unanswered.
  6. Every time you take the online assignment,  you have to make sure you press the SUBMIT button, otherwise, the system will not record your answers and your grade will record as a zero.
  7. Please, do not be deceived by your child telling you that he/she does not have any assignments.   If there is no written assignment, there is always the assignment of the oral practice of the language.

 

8 Formative assessment (classwork- homework) You will need headphones

Formative assessments: cover grammar, pronunciation, reading, vocabulary, and other content discussed during class. 

Important:
Formative assessments will have four (4) attempts and you will have immediate feedback with answers after your last attempt. 

Improve your grade

 If you want to improve your grade, this is the opportunity you need to take. Use all of your attempts and get a better grade.

Extra credit

There is no extra credit to improve your grade. The extra credit is complete every assignment on time and/or in class use all of your attempts

9. Summative assessment (Test- Quiz) You will need headphones

 The Summative assessment will check your understanding of the material we have learned.

Summative assessment includes listening comprehension, grammar, written composition, speaking, and reading.

👉 You will have only one attempt, use your time wisely

There is NO other attempt (This is a TEST)

You cannot stop and/ or resume the test.

Questions will be lock after answering

Important:

Do NOT copy formative or summative assessment or any other assignments from other students. That is considered plagiarism, and both students will earn a zero.

Canvas software record everything, your answers, what time do you started the assessment, how long it takes to complete and what time did you finish it.

10.  Absences and make-up work it is your responsibility to get the work you missed when you were out.

You need to go to the Canvas website and do the lesson that you missed that day and complete the online assignment or online homework by the next day. Make-up test/quizzes will be a different format of the test/quiz given on the designated test/quiz day. You must schedule a make-up test/quiz with-in 2 days of your return to school. If you are absent or a test/quiz day, be prepared to take it the next day you are on campus.

11. Class Expectations

Expect to study and /or review Spanish at least 30 minutes per day.

  1. Respect – you will be respectful of the teacher, classroom, other students and yourself.
  2. Arrive at class on time and bring your materials to class every day. (Workbook, notebook, pencil, etc.)
  3. You must be in your seat when the bell rings. Act accordingly and start working or reviewing your  material.
  4. Be respectful and polite. Module your voice when working in small groups or in pairs.
  5. Stay in your seat unless you have permission to do otherwise. The teacher will dismiss you from class; do not pack up beforehand.
  6. Assignments will be completed and turned in on time.
  7. Do not bring anything to the class that would disrupt or distract others. No cell phones, MP3 players, electronics, headphones, games, makeup, or food allowed in class.
  8. Bags and purses will not be allowed on desks. They must be stored under the desk or in a locker during class time
  9. No SLEEPING in Class
  10. No eating, chewing gum, drinking (except water)
  11. Maintain respect and quiet, think before you act, and minimize disruptions to the learning process.
  12. Cell phones: FCS and FHS policy states that cell phones and other electronic devices must not be seen, heard or used during the school hours.

12.Communication with Parents

If you ever have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or email me.  If you have an urgent matter, please email me with a good time to reach you on the telephone.  It will be easier to communicate more effectively this way.

14. GRADING

15  Calculation of Final Grade

  1. a) First quarter          40%
    b) Second quarter     40%
    c) Final Exam             20%

 

IMPORTANT : Please read:

a) If a student was absent or will miss a week of class, simply have to go to the Canvas website and complete all the assignments posted every day.
b) There is no guarantee a student can learn and understand the same way online without the previous explanations of the class.
c) Please keep in mind that requesting writing make-up work, it is not the same as the material learned and practice in class.
d) The credit will be earned by the students only with the 100% completion of the online assignments, test and Quizzes from the Canvas website.
e) There is not credit for requesting writing assignments (make up work) for absences.

                             

*** Note to parents:  All students should have access to PowerSchool where they can view their grades during the course of the semester.  Ask your student for his/her access information at the beginning of the semester.  Please feel free to contact me if you are unable to access PowerSchool or have a question regarding your child’s grades.
