Overview of English Language Arts Classes for 2021-22

Students will complete several novel studies this year; daily and weekly reading, comprehension, and writing assignments will be posted in Google Classroom.  Titles of books that we plan to read include 'Unbroken,' 'A Midsummer Night's Dream,' and 'Inside Out and Back Again.'

In addition to the novel studies, students will read selections and passages from various digital sources.  Students will access these sources from their Chromebooks, and tutorials will be provided in class with instructions so that students can sign up to participate.  These sources include Newsela, ReadWorks, and CommonLit; these will include fictional selections from various literature genres, non-fiction and informational texts, and poetry.

Students will participate in activities during scheduled block classes that will include reading, discussion, guided practice, and reflection.  In addition to the reading and related assignments that are completed during class, students must read independently.  In addition to guided reading and practice during the class periods, students are expected to read independently to complete some of the related assignments.

Diagnostic reading assessments will be completed at the beginning of the year to check each student's reading level.  Mid-year and end-of-year reading assessments will be completed at scheduled times to identify the progress that each student attains.

During the first week of student enrollment, students  who are enrolled in my ELA classes will receive email invitations to join Google Classroom.  They will need the FCS Google account user name and password to access this message.  If you have questions about the student login process, please email me.   Parents may request to be a Google Classroom Guardian to view weekly assignments and to see other important information, such as announcements that are posted in the Google Classroom 'Stream.'
