Course Description and Outline

Course Description   

In this course students are introduced to the apparel and textile industry in the areas of design, textiles and apparel engineering.  Emphasis is placed on students applying these design and engineering skills to create and produce apparel products. Art, literacy, mathematics, and science are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include service learning and job shadowing. Apprenticeship and Cooperative education are not available for this course. Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) competitive events, community service, and leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply essential standards and workplace readiness skills through authentic experiences.

Course Outline

The course is divided into 3 main objectives (listed below). You will be provided a more detailed course outline.

         1.00–  Understand the apparel industry and design.

         2.00 – Understand textiles.

         3.00 – Understand apparel engineering.

*There is an Apparel and Textile project list. Supplies vary from project to project but in general, all projects will require FABRIC and ALL PURPOSE THREAD…sometimes a pattern and sometimes other notions like buttons/zippers/snaps/etc. Students must provide supplies for their sewing projects to earn the right to choose their projects.*

Virtual Learning

Students will participate in the course through Google Meet. Canvas is where all announcements, course content, and assignments will be located. 

Asynchronous Day 

No live sessions will occur on this day. Students should log onto Canvas to complete the Attendance Check Google Form to be counted present on this day by 11:59PM or an absence will be put into PowerSchool. This is a great time for students to catch up on incomplete or missing assignments. 

Attendance Policy

Students are expected to be in class via live session or A/B schedule each day according to the 2020-2021 school calendar unless it is an Asynchronous Day (see Asynchronous Day) or school has been canceled. Students who are absent on school days must complete the work for that day by 11:59PM to be counted present or submit an excused absence note to the attendance office. Absences are excused for the following reasons: illness or injury, quarantine, death in immediate family, medical and/or dental appointments, court or administrative proceedings, religious observance, educational opportunity. 

Course Evaluation - Grading for this course is based on the following:

A: 100-90

B: 89-80

C: 79-70

D: 69-60

F: Below 60

Formative (Classwork/Homework/Quizzes)-50%

Summative (Tests)- 50%

All assignments MUST be completed on time as assigned. 

Assignments that are turned in after 11:59 pm on the assigned due date will be considered LATE.

Students will have one additional day to complete the assignment with no late penalty. After that date the assignment will be marked MISSING in PowerSchool. 

Students that turn in the assignment after that date will receive a 10 point deduction per day for the first five days.(Example. 10 points-1 Day Late, 50 Points-5 Day Late)

Once the assignment has been turned in then it will be graded and the appropriate grade will be recorded in PowerSchool, but LATE will still be indicated.

There will be a final evaluation for this course. The evaluation counts for 20% of the student’s final course grade. 

Class Expectations

Virtual

  • Be prepared (on time) for Google Meet and log onto Canvas.
  • Be dressed appropriately for Google Meet.
  • Be respectful during Google Meet.

In-Person

The bell at the beginning of the class period signals the beginning of class. Students should be in their assigned seats and ready to begin class when the bell begins to ring. Students will receive the school-wide consequences for tardies.

  • Be prepared. Includes time, work, and equipment.
  • Be respectful. Includes people, property, and ideas.
  • Be safe. 
  • Be responsible.
  • Water in a clear container is the only food/beverage allowed in the classroom.
  • Follow all school and county guidelines.

Consequences include:

  • Telephone call or email to parent/guardian
  • Teacher/Parent and/or Student/Teacher Conference
  • Administrative Contact 

HOW TO SUCCEED

  • Show up to class. Be on time!
  • DEMAND full understanding. Ask until you are satisfied. Communicate with me.
  • Put your full effort into all assignments. Don’t depend on extra credit. Don’t even ask for it.
  • Participate in our class with questions and discussion.
  • Sleep 7-8 hours every night and eat a healthy breakfast every morning. An apple in the morning is better caffeine than a cup of coffee or a can of soda. Sleep deprivation on critical nights after learning may cause 30% loss.
  • Come to instructional support when you need help. If you do not tell me you need something, I will not know.
  • Learn the vocabulary. Understanding the language of Apparel and Textiles is imperative to learning the concepts for this class.
