FOR PARENTS: Civics Course Guide for This Week

Civics and Economics is a course that will teach students the skills and knowledge necessary to become responsible and effective citizens in an interdependent world.

Materials:
Notebook with a pocket (or binder with loose leaf paper), pencil, pen.
Charged Chromebook or other Internet-capable device that can stream content, including a smartphone.

Classroom Expectations:

Students should log on to the Google Meet for that day using the link provided by Mr. H.

Once they have logged on, they should type "present" in the Chat box. At that time, they should mute their microphone and turn off their camera.

The livestream of the lesson will then begin. On a normally scheduled day, it will last 1 hour. Please note that even if Mr. H finishes his presentation with time to spare, the livestream will continue (i.e., Mr. H will still be available to the whole class) until 1 hour is up.

Instructional support time will then begin. For the rest of the class session, Mr. H will be available for one-on-one help.

If students have questions during the livestream, they should type them in the Chat box. Mr. H will address them as they come in.

Consequences for Infractions:

Mr. H can mute the microphone or disable the Chat box for each student if necessary. In extreme cases, a student may simply be removed from the livestream. It will still be their responsibility to access the recording of the lecture and complete all assignments.

Grading:
There will be two categories for grades. FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS will be the equivalent of daily assignments. These will add up to 40% of the course grade, and there will be 3-5 of them per week. SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS will be quizzes and tests. These will add up to 60% of the grade, and there will be 1-2 of them per week.

Grade Scale:
90-100 – A
80-89 – B
70-79 – C
60-69 – D
Below 60 – F

Attendance:
Every student must check in to the livestream every day it is possible to do so. However, you may also be marked "present" by submitting the assignment for that day before 11:59 PM.

Missing and Late Work:
All assignments must be completed on time as assigned.

For formative assignments:

Assignments that are turned in after 11:59 PM on the assigned due date will be considered LATE and marked LATE in PowerSchool.

Students will have one additional day to complete the assignment with no late penalty. The assignment will then be marked MISSING in PowerSchool and a ZERO recorded.

Students that turn in a completed assignment after the initial due date will receive a 10 point deduction per day for the first five days. (Example: 1 day late - 10 points deducted; 5 days late - 50 points deducted).

Once the assignment has been turned in, it will then be graded and the appropriate grade will be recorded in PowerSchool, but LATE will still be indicated.

Assignments turned in after the first five days will receive 50% of the raw score.

For summative assignments:

Assignments that are turned in after 11:59 PM on the assigned due date will be considered LATE and marked LATE in PowerSchool.

Students will have one additional day to complete the assignment with no late penalty. The assignment will then be marked MISSING in PowerSchool and a ZERO recorded.

Students that turn in a completed assignment after the initial due date will receive a 10 point deduction per day for the first two days. (Example: 1 day late - 10 points deducted; 2 days late - 20 points deducted).

Once the assignment has been turned in, it will then be graded and the appropriate grade will be recorded in PowerSchool, but LATE will still be indicated.

Assignments turned in after the first two days will receive 80% of the raw score.
