COURSE DESCRIPTION

Students in English I read a variety of literary and related informational texts. They develop an understanding of literary concepts, elements, and terms as a foundation for further study of World, American, and British literature. This course will focus on literature and composition, reinforcing a study of standard grammar usage, mechanics, and vocabulary. This course includes the short story, the novel, drama, poetry, mythology, and non-fiction. Students will engage in the following writing workshops: Letter to Mrs. Starr or a video  presentation which allows students to introduce themselves, annotating, narratives, textual evidence, ACES format, creating and analyzing poetry, mini research paper, essay, workplace document (resume).

COMMUNICATION

All communication will be posted on the class Canvas page.  Also on our class Canvas page, students can access lessons, writing assignments, weekly vocabulary list, reading assignments, etc. Students and parents are encouraged to address all questions and/or concerns through email: gwenstarr@fcschools.net. Parents are also encouraged to call, use the above-listed telephone number.

ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSIONS

Submit all assignments as an email attachment. Tests and quizzes will be taken in Canvas; however, this may be subject to change. Guidance will be provided in advance. 

DAILY LESSONS

Class lessons will be delivered by Google Meet. Students will sign in at the beginning of class for attendance verification. 

CLASS SCHEDULES:

Block 2: 10:15 am - 11:15 am  (Instructional Support: 11:15 - 11:30 am)

Block 3: 11:35 - 1:35 pm (Includes lunch and Instructional Support)

Block 4: 1:45 pm - 2:45 pm (Instructional Support: 2:45 - 3:00 pm)

TEACHER PLANNING SCHEDULE:  Block 4: 1:15 pm - 2:30 pm

COURSE ASSESSMENTS

There will be writing/reading assignments/quizzes/a poetry project 

Students will be given vocabulary words and a weekly vocabulary quiz

Teacher Made Exam - (20% of final grade) 

Assessments will be weighted as follows: 50% - Tests, Projects (Poetry Project) - 50% - Quizzes, In-class assignments

GRADING

A 90 - 100 (Any late work is exempt from this category)

B 80 - 89

C 70 - 79

D 60 - 69

F 59 and below

CLASS PARTICIPATION

Students are encouraged to ask and answer questions, and lead discussions (microphone or chat)

CHROMEBOOK INSTRUCTION (1:1)

Chromebooks will be provided; students will be engaged in extensive independent study. These Chromebooks are school property and must be carefully handled.
