Students will access course information by clicking on Modules. All assignments will be at the top of the Distance Learning Module. Instructions for each day will be in the Daily Instructions File under the day's date. Please read the Daily Instructions file each day. It will explain what is to be done for that day. Students will need their student number and password for NCEdcloud
PARENTS: Use the following directions to create a Canvas Observer Account
- Have your student(s) Generate a Pairing Code (this will be different for each student).
- Go to https://fcschools.instructure.com/login/canvas (bookmark this site so that you can easily access your Observer dashboard for your student(s).
- Click on Parent of a Canvas User? in the upper right-hand corner of the window.
- Complete the required information in the window, which will include inputting the student Pairing Code. Multiple students can be added.
- Go to the Dashboard to see your student(s)' courses.
- Parents can sign into this account to easily access their student's courses within Canvas.
- What can parents view as an Observer?
Course Description: Biology
This course is required for graduation in North Carolina and has a required End of Course test. The End of Course test must be passed and will count for 20% of the grade.
The Essential Standards on which this course is based is as follows:
Bio.1.1 Understand the relationship between the structures and functions of cells and their organelles.
Bio.1.2 Analyze the cell as a living system.
Bio.2.1 Analyze the interdependence of living organisms within their environments.
Bio.2.2 Understand the impact of human activities on the environment (one generation affects the next).
Bio.3.1 Explain how traits are determined by the structure and function of DNA.
Bio.3.2 Understand how the environment, and/or the interaction of alleles, influences the expression of genetic traits.
Bio.3.3 Understand the application of DNA technology.
Bio.3.4 Explain the theory of evolution by natural selection as a mechanism for how species change over time.
Bio.3.5 Analyze how classification systems are developed upon speciation.
Bio.4.1 Understand how biological molecules are essential to the survival of living organisms.
Bio.4.2 Analyze the relationships between biochemical processes and energy use in the cell.
This course will also concentrate on developing an understanding of science as a human endeavor, the nature of scientific inquiry, the tentative nature of scientific knowledge and the rigorous methods that must be used to obtain it. Students will also be observing, classifying, calculating, plotting graphs, measuring, inferring, predicting, formulating models, interpreting data, hypothesizing and experimenting. An understanding of the technology that plays a
role in the biological sciences will also be included along with the current biological and environmental issues of society today. Scientific Literacy for today’s world will be focused on throughout the course.
1) Coming to class every day on time and prepared with notebook, pen, etc.
2) Bringing your chromebook fully charged and a pair of earbuds for it
3) Keeping a notebook following the format the teacher will show you.
**Please purchase 3 ring binder and loose leaf to be used as a notebook.**
4) Completing all homework and assignments on time.
5) Preparing properly for tests by reviewing and studying
6) Getting assignments done promptly after absences. (within 3 days) It is your
responsibility to make up what you missed on the day or days of your absence.
For each 6 weeks:
Tests and projects - 40 % Quizzes and Labs – 30%
Classwork and Homework - 30%
Each 9 weeks’ grade will count as 40% each and the final Exam (EOC) shall count 20% toward the final grade.
Class Rules: Will be discussed in the classroom and a copy of these rules will be placed in the notebook. All students are expected to follow these guidelines and treat the teacher and all other students with respect.
The classroom should be a pleasant environment where all students can feel safe and comfortable. I will work hard to make it this kind of productive work environment. If problems arise, both students and teacher will work towards a solution together. Parent involvement is encouraged. ** I will be available for tutoring every day after school by appointment. If a student feels they need tutoring they should speak to me and arrange a day.
