Virtual Office hours: M-F 9am-4pm  via google and canvas; students can access links for these hours from either Gmail (Grades 6-12) or their Google Calendar (Grades K-12) sent from their teacher(s).  Paper packets for K-8 students that were distributed for April 6-20 can be found HERE.

Students will access course information by clicking on Assignments.  Students will need their student number and password for NCEdcloud

PARENTS:  Use the following directions to create a Canvas Observer Account

• Have your student(s) Generate a Pairing Code (this will be different for each student).
• Go to https://fcschools.instructure.com/login/canvas (bookmark this site so that you can easily access your Observer dashboard for your student(s).
• Click on Parent of a Canvas User? in the upper right-hand corner of the window.
• Complete the required information in the window, which will include inputting the student Pairing Code. Multiple students can be added.
• Go to the Dashboard to see your student(s)' courses.
• Parents can sign into this account to easily access their student's courses within Canvas.
• What can parents view as an Observer?

English IV Honors

 

   

English IV Honors is open to academically curious and self-motivated students who desire a greater challenge, an accelerated pace, and a deeper exploration of the course content than is available through the regular curriculum. Honors courses demand that students manage difficult course material, engage in higher-level thinking, and discuss ideas at length to form connections between academic disciplines.  Students enrolling in English IV Honors should expect to be held accountable for a variety of advanced readings, analysis of complex ideas, and different types of assessments.  Excellent time-management, organizational, and study skills are vital to student success in the Honors program.

Student Characteristics

Students are expected to write multiple pieces to analyze, explain, and/or evaluate a variety of subjects related to the literature studied in the class.  Students should be capable of reading up to 30 pages of assigned reading each day in addition to other assigned work.  In class, students should be prepared to demonstrate content area skills and actively participate in the discussion of course content.  Students at the honors level possess qualities that other students are still developing. 

Honors students are presumed to be:

• Interested and talented in the subject.
• Strong and avid readers capable of reading above grade level.
• Able to work independently and in groups without constant direction.
• Able to face and overcome academic challenges.
• Ready to handle a rigorous workload.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

Students will

1. prepare to perform successfully in reading across the curriculum
2. prepare to perform successfully in language arts across the curriculum
3. prepare to use a variety of study skills
4. prepare to use critical thinking and processing skills
5. prepare to effectively read a variety of informational texts and be able to use a variety of analysis, summative, and evaluative skills to prepare for the English I NC Final Exam.

 

CLASSROOM RULES  

Each student will

1. Act appropriately when entering and leaving classroom
2. Be in his/her assigned chair when the classroom door is closed after the tardy bell rings
3. Bring required supplies each day
4. Ask for permission to leave your school chair.
5. Turn in assignments during the class period when due.
6. Keep all notes and handouts in a three-ring binder.
7. Make up work within the first three days after returning from an absence. (See Board of Education Policy) No other make-up work will be allowed.
8. Use common courtesy language.
9. Ask for permission to talk.
10. Stay in the student section of the classroom and not touch or remove anything from the teacher’s area.

 

 

 

 

 

GRADING

The grade will be assigned on the basis of work in these areas:

                Quizzes-20%

              Homework/Daily Work-20%

                                Tests and Major Assignments (including four independent reading books)-60%

 

Tutoring Schedule:  Monday-Thursday 2:45p.m.-4:15p.m.

 

Priority Standards:  Reading Literature (RL) and Reading Informational (RI)

                                    -RL2, RI2-Analyze theme

                                    -RL4, RI2-Interpret technical, connotative, and figurative

                                    meanings

                                    -RL5, RI5-Analyze the structure of texts

                                    Writing (W)

                                    -W2-Write informative/explanatory texts

                                    -W4- Produce clear and coherent writing that is

audience-appropriate

                                    Language (L)

                                    -L1-Demonstrate command of the conventions of grammar and

                                    usage

                                    -L2-Demonstrate command of the conventions of capitalization,

                                                punctuation, and spelling
