Welcome to third grade! Below you will find information about our classroom throughout the year, as well as special announcements, "I Can" statements, and links to activities/videos that we are using in class that you can also use at home!

I CAN statements for ELA and Math:

4th Quarter ELA

*We will be continuing to review ALL standards through the use of EOG type passages in preparation of the EOG.

RL.3.4

  • I can Identify clues that can be used to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases.
  • I can examine the story to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases (context clues).
  • I can use context clues in the story to define unfamiliar vocabulary.

    RI.3.8

    • I can recognize and use various text features to help better understand the informational text I am reading.

    RI.3.9

    • I can compare and contrast informational texts on the same topic to help me better understand the subject.

       W.3.1

  • I can write an opinion piece that supports a point of view on topics or texts by addressing the prompt and/or effectively developing the topic
  • I can state and support my opinion about a topic or text by using reasoning, details, text-based evidence, and/or description.
  • I can use a graphic organizer to help create an organizational structure that lists reasons that support my opinion

4th Quarter Math

*We will be continuing with fractions throughout the fourth quarter as well as spiral review of all standards in preparation for the EOG.

NC.3.NF.1

Interpret unit fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 as quantities formed when a whole is partitioned into equal parts;

  • Explain that a unit fraction is one of those parts.
  • Represent and identify unit fractions using area and length models.

NC.3.NF.2

Interpret fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 using area and length models.

  • Using an area model I can explain that the numerator of a fraction represents the number of equal parts of the unit fraction.
  • Using a number line I can explain that the numerator of a fraction represents the number of lengths of the unit fraction from 0.

NC.3.NF.3

I can represent equivalent fractions with area and length models by:

  • I can compose and decompose fractions into equivalent fractions using related fractions: halves, fourths and eighths; thirds and sixths.
  • I can explain that a fraction with the same numerator and denominator equals one whole.
  • I can express whole numbers as fractions, and recognize fractions that are equivalent to whole numbers.

NC.3.NF.4

I can compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size, using area and length models, and using the >, <, and = symbols.

I can recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole with denominators: halves, fourths and eighths; thirds and sixths.

3MD.1

I can tell what time it is using analog and digital clocks,

I can use addition and subtraction on a number line to determine the interval of time that has elapsed.
