A new school year means a new grade, new teachers, new goals, and maybe even a new school! In order to help you and your child with special needs be as successful as you can be, we wll provide weekly tips !

Information obtaining from (http://www.readingrockets.org/article/back-school-tips-parents-children-special-needs)

Tip # 1  (9/19/2017)

Organization

In the world of special education, there are lots of meetings, paperwork, and documentation to keep track of. Try to keep a familycalendar of school events, special education meetings, conferences, etc. Setting up a binder or folder to keep your child's special education documentation, meeting notices, and IEPs in sequential order can also help you stay organized.

Tip # 2  (9/27/2017)

Start a communication log

Keeping track of all phone calls, e-mails, notes home, meetings, and conferences is important. Create a "communication log" for yourself in a notebook that is easily accessible. Be sure to note the dates, times, and nature of the communications you have.

Tip #3  Review your child's current IEP (10/16/2017)

The IEP is the cornerstone of your child's educational program, so it's important that you have a clear understanding of it. Note when the IEP expires and if your child is up for reevaluation this year. Most importantly, be sure that this IEP still "fits" your child's needs!

Tip # 4  Keep everyone informed (10/17/2017)

If changes in rountine, medication, or situations have changed, let us know! It helps us to know what may be causing the student difficulty at school.  It's a team effort. Communication is a vital component of  ensuring that our students are successful.

Tip # 5  Set a Standard!  (10/25/2017)

Never lower your expectations for your child | Too often, students with intellectual disabilities are given low expectations because it makes it easier for caregivers and school staff to deal with them. What people believe about intelligence is more important than the actual intelligence. Studies have proven that priming someone to believe in or question their capabilities significantly affects outcomes. Effort does matter more than ability. People who think of intelligence as continuous, malleable and developing are more motivated, try harder and are more successful than people who believe that intelligence is finite and limiting, like an IQ score. Set a standard! (https://www.pbs.org/newshour/education/advice-to-students-and-parents-with-learning-disabilities)
